Now that a successor(s) has been chosen for the farm, it’s time for the owner and successor to sit down together and set the short- and long-term goals for the farm. There’s a very good reason that this should be a joint effort.

Setting realistic, effective and smart goals for the farm needs two perspectives. The existing owner brings experience, technical expertise and a memory to the table. But a successor brings new ideas, optimism, a different set of skills and new energy to the discussion. If the owner and successor work together, the goals are more likely to be realistic, innovative, and motivating for everyone.
